Pictures: 2012 International (Geneva) Motor Show
03/10/2012
Geneva continues to impress as probably the most diverse major auto show in the world. Displayed on its two floors is the widest selection of production and concept vehicles anywhere. For 2012, nearly all the major manufacturers focused primarily on production-ready vehicles. Even many concept cars were clearly designed to be adaptable for production. Notably lacking were battery-electric cars, aside from Nissan's Leaf. Gasoline-electric and diesel-electric hybrids were shown by several manufacturers, but more notable was the many introductions of B-segment (subcompact) and C-segment (compact) cars from most automakers. Sports cars ranging from the affordable to the extravagant were also in evidence, so although their contribution to overall sales is relatively insignificant, manufacturers realize that these are the ideal vehicle to showcase their most advanced technology. Despite declining sales in the European market, manufacturers keep rolling out exciting new models to entice customers into showrooms across the continent.

Overcoming the gloom of the past few years, the 2012 NAIAS highlights the optimistic outlook of global automakers as car sales recover worldwide. GM revealed the entry level Cadillac ATS sedan and the Buick Encore compact crossover. A midsize Fusion sedan was the major introduction from Ford, along with the Lincoln MKZ concept. The new Dodge Dart is Chrysler's long delayed re-entry into the compact sedan segment. Nissan quietly introduced the new Pathfinder, now transformed into a crossover. Toyota brought several hybrid concepts and the subcompact Prius c to further expand its hybrid lineup. Acura showed the affordable ILX compact sedan, and the second-generation RDX crossover. The eagerly anticipated Acura NSX sports car will be made in the USA. A new SL is a rare event, and Detroit was the global introduction for the latest generation premium convertible from Mercedes. Audi revealed the Q3 Vail as its smallest crossover in its model range. BMW brought the new 3-Series sedans, which should drive even more customers to dealer showrooms. With memories of the last recession slowly fading, the NAIAS regains its status as the most significant auto show in North America.

First Look: 2012 Toyota Prius c
01/10/2012
Toyota has grown the successful Prius hybrid into a family of vehicles. The new Prius C extends Toyota's proven hybrid technology into a smaller, lighter and more affordable vehicle. The smaller size and weight pays dividends in fuel efficiency. Although the Prius C is slightly larger than the Yaris 5d, its EPA rating of 53 City / 46 Hwy clearly exceeds that of the Yaris (30 City / 38 Hwy). The Prius C is a traditional 5d hatchback with a tall rear roofline (the Prius has a steeply raked fastback). The rear seat folds for hauling bulky items.
First Look: 2013 Ford Fusion
01/09/2012
The Ford Fusion fits between the compact Focus sedan and the larger Taurus in Ford's lineup. However, the Fusion may be the most important car that Ford makes as it competes in the hotly contested mid-sized segment. The Fusion offers distinctive styling, a wide choice of powertrain and a good value. The redesigned 2013 Fusion is at the leading edge of powertrain and connectivity technology. A number of features like optional all-wheel-drive and start/stop technology are rare in the segment, and the availability of a plug-in hybrid model is rare in the industry. Pricing will be available closer to the vehicle's launch later in 2012.
