New Car Guide Toyota

2012 Toyota 4Runner

Toyota has established the 4Runner as a capable midsize SUV, filling a unique niche in the market. In Toyota's lineup, it offers buyers a more ruggedized SUV than the Highlander while offering a size advantage over the FJ Cruiser and a price advantage over the Land Cruiser. The latest model adds a more luxurious interior, but retains its off-road capabilities. A 4.0L V-6 is standard. 4Runners are available in 2WD or part-time 4WD models in the SR5 and Trail grades. A Torsen(R) center differential is standard on the 4WD 4Runner Limited. An available third row seat allows the 4Runner to carry seven.

2012 Toyota Avalon

The Avalon is the most luxurious and spacious Toyota sedan offered. Larger proportions and a more powerful engine set the Avalon apart from the mid-sized Camry. Avalon is offered in two trim levels each with a healthy list of standard equipment. All models are front-wheel-drive with a 268 hp 3.5L V6 coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Similar models from other manufacturers include the Buick LaCrosse, Hyundai Azera, Ford Taurus, and Chrylser 300.

2012 Toyota Camry

The Camry is Toyota's mid-sized sedan and a perennial top-seller. The Camry has a solid reputation for reliability that makes it an automatic choice for many buyers. Most families looking for a new car should start their search with a mid-sized sedan. These vehicles have seating for five passengers, large trunks, good fuel economy, and are priced less than most SUVs. The Camry is the embodiment of these traits with over 80 inches of combined legroom, 15.4 cubic feet of cargo volume in the trunk, and fuel economy of 25/35 (city/highway) for four cylinder models. Toyota offers the front-wheel-drive Camry in three trim levels with three powertrains. The Camry range starts with the L and LE models which include basic power equipment, but the L omits remote keyless entry and both models include steel wheels with wheel covers. The sportier SE model adds lower profile tires, and alloy wheels. The top XLE trim level includes power seats, automatic climate control and a sunroof. All four grades equip a standard 2.5l four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic. A 3.5l V6 is available on the SE and XLE and also adds additional packaged features. The Camry range also includes Toyota's famed hybrid system which is offered in LE and XLE grades. Hybrid models add about $3500 to the price, but substantially increase fuel economy to an EPA rated 43/39 (city/highway). With Camry prices ranging from $22,000-$30,000, comparison shoppers will find that there are more powerful, stylish or affordable choices in the segment. However, the Camry represents a good overall blend of the segments best traits and very few cars can equal the Camry's stellar reputation.

2012 Toyota Corolla

The Corolla is one of Toyota's longest running models, dating back to the late 1960's. Over the years, it has built a reputation as a reliable compact sedan. In today's crowded compact segment, the Corolla has the size of larger models like the Chevrolet Cruze or Honda Civic, but is priced lower than some of these models. The base model includes A/C, power windows and locks, but excludes cruise control and alloy wheels which are included in the higher LE and S trim levels. All Corolla models equip a 1.8l four-cylinder engine rated at 132-bhp mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. All models equip drum brakes in the rear. Fuel economy is good at 26/34 (city/highway) but trails the segment leaders. Comparison shoppers will find that there are better values in the segment.

2012 Toyota Corolla Matrix

The Toyota Matrix is a small five-door hatchback which is closely related to the Corolla. A standard 132-bhp 1.8L I-4 drives the front wheels in the base models; whereas a larger displacement 2.4L four-cylinder rated at 158-bhp is found in the higher S trim level. Introduced in 2009, the second generation Matrix lost its tall crossover wagon styling but still offers an all-wheel-drive model for increased traction. The versatile 5-door body style has a large hatch which provides access to a cargo area finished in a hard durable plastic for utility. At one time, the Matrix was a unique body style, but segment is more robust today and includes uniquely stylish vehicles like the Kia Soul and the more fuel-efficient, all-wheel-drive Impreza.

2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser

The FJ Cruiser is a small SUV with retro styling and off-road capabilities meant to evoke original Land Cruisers. The FJ Cruiser has two full-sized front doors and two rear-hinged rear access doors to provide access to the second row seats. The interior is finished in durable hard plastics. A large cargo area is accessible through a side-hinged rear door. A 4.0l V6 engine rated at 258-bhp is standard. The FJ Cruiser is available in both RWD, and 4WD versions. Compared to other specialized off-road vehicles the FJ Cruiser is substantially larger on the outside than a Jeep Wrangler but has less passenger room. A rather low combined fuel economy rating of 18 MPG combined with a 19-gallon fuel tank means that you'll be filling the tank frequently.

2012 Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander was one of the first SUVs to fit the definition of a car-based crossover SUV. Introduced in 2008, the second generation grew significantly but the Highlander is still several inches shorter and narrower than other models in the segment. On the inside, the Highlander contains three rows of seats for up to 7 passengers. A unique middle row seating concept has a small bridging seat that stows in the front center console. Due to its smaller exterior, the Highlander is smaller in the third row and cargo area than its competitors. The base engine is a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine. A more powerful 270-bhp 3.5L V6 is optional on lower trim levels and standard on the top Limited model. One area that sets the Highlander apart is the optional gasoline/electric hybrid model. The Highlander Hybrid is rated at 28/28 (city/highway). The Highlander is a good value with well-equipped models starting at around $29,000.

2013 Toyota Land Cruiser

The legendary Land Cruiser has been part of the Toyota lineup for more than 50 years. Well known for its off-road capability and unsurpassed comfort, the Land Cruiser is the premier SUV in Toyota's lineup. The standard 381-bhp 5.7L V-8 is coupled to a 6-speed automatic, 2-speed transfer case, and adjustable suspension for true rock crawling prowess. The Land Cruiser is sold in just one trim level which includes a leather interior, heated steering wheel, dynamic cruise control and navigation system. The Land Cruiser SUV, while roomy by five-passenger standards includes a third row seat that stores in a bulky upright position.

2012 Toyota Prius

As a popular hybrid icon, the Prius has no equal. The Prius combines a roomy interior with a five-door aerodynamic body to create a shape that has come to define the Prius. Beneath the skin, Toyota's proprietary Hybrid Synergy Drive(R) integrates a 98-bhp 1.8L inline-4 with an 80-hp electric motor for seamless operation. In 2012, a Plug-in Hybrid version of the Prius joined the lineup. The Plug-in model replaces the standard Nickel-Metal Hydride battery with a larger Lithium-ion battery. The larger battery allows electric-only driving for about 11 miles at speeds up to 62 mph. After the charge is depleted, the Plug-in model behaves identically to the standard model. The Plug-in battery can be fully charged in 3 hours at 120V, or in 1.5 hours using an external 240V charger. Fuel economy performance for hybrids and plug-in hybrids depends heavily on driving habits, speeds and distances. The EPA rates the standard Prius at 51/48 (city/hwy). The Prius Plug-in is expected to be rated at over 87 MPGe. The plug-in model will only be available in 15 states. Toyota will expand availability to all other states in 2013.

2012 Toyota Prius c

Toyota has grown the successful Prius hybrid into a family of vehicles. The new Prius C extends Toyota's proven hybrid technology into a smaller, lighter and more affordable vehicle. The smaller size and weight pays dividends in fuel efficiency. Although the Prius C is slightly larger than the Yaris 5d, its EPA rating of 53 City / 46 Hwy clearly exceeds that of the Yaris (30 City / 38 Hwy). The Prius C is a traditional 5d hatchback with a tall rear roofline (the Prius has a steeply raked fastback). The rear seat folds for hauling bulky items.

2012 Toyota Prius v

The Prius family has grown to include the Prius V which replaces the steeply sloped rear hatch of the standard Prius with a higher wagon-like profile. The Prius V loses an inch of legroom but increases the cargo capacity by 12 cubic feet to 34. The extra cargo area and utility are intended to increase the appeal of the Prius for small families. Under the hood, The Prius V uses the same proprietary Hybrid Synergy Drive system which pairs a 98-bhp 1.8L inline-4 with an 80-hp electric motor for seamless operation. The heavier Prius V is rated at 44/40 (city/highway) by the EPA. Toyota offers the Prius V in three trim levels named Two, Three, and Five with pricing ranging from $27,000 to over $30,000.

2012 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 was one of the first compact SUVs on the market. Over time, it has grown considerably. The larger size allows for optional 3-row seating and optional V6 power. The base powertrain is a 179-bhp, 2.5L four-cylinder with a 4-speed automatic. With 269 horsepower, the optional 3.5l V6 has more power than anything else in the class. The availability of third row seating is unique in the segment, but the seats are only suitable for occasional usage and rob the RAV4 of utility. Toyota has all the bases covered with models; there are three trim levels, two engines, FWD, AWD, 5-passenger, and 7-passenger models. In addition, the RAV4 offers a dizzying number of packages and options. Toyota has recently started adding value packages to try and tame the complexity.

2012 Toyota Sequoia

The original Sequoia was the first full-size SUV from a Japanese manufacturer. Now in its second generation, the Sequoia is every bit as large as rival models from Ford, General Motors, and Nissan. Unlike the domestics Toyota offers the Sequoia in just one length which splits the difference between the shorter SUVS like the Tahoe and Expedition and longer models like the Suburban and Expedition EL. The Sequoia has three rows of seats for up to 8 people. Sequoia models equip either a 4.6L V-8 or a 5.7L V-8 and a six-speed automatic transmission. A properly optioned Sequoia can tow up to 7400 lbs. Three trim levels are offered ranging in price from $41,000 to around $60,000. Although full-size SUVs have become popular as family haulers, their only real advantage is the higher tow ratings. Full-size SUVs with truck underpinnings are robbed of interior space with the body mounted over the frame. Modern FWD-biased SUVs offer similar interior room with improved maneuverability, cargo capacity and fuel efficiency for far less money.

2012 Toyota Sienna

The Toyota Sienna is one of the best minivans on the market. A wide variety of trim levels and features ensures that there is a model to fit each buyer's tastes and budget. The 266-bhp 3.5L V-6 and 6-speed automatic on most models provide enough power to handle a full passenger and cargo load. A four-cylinder engine is available on lower grades for buyers interested in higher fuel economy. Seating choices include 7 and 8-passenger configurations. The third row seats split and fold flat into the floor. The removable 2nd row center seats slide fore/aft for a variety of loading options. Sienna Limited models equip unique second row seats with an extendable leg rest similar to a lounge chair. All Sienna models equip Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and AWD is available for better traction and handling in bad weather. For those buyers looking for a sportier ride, the Sienna also offers an SE trim level with unique bodywork and nineteen inch wheels.

2012 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab

The Tacoma Access Cab offers extra cargo or passenger room without the bulk of a 4-door body. The cargo bed inner liner is made of SMC plastic to minimize corrosion. An economical 159-bhp 2.7L I-4, or a powerful 236-bhp 4.0L V-6, combined with a 5-speed manual, 4-speed automatic (2WD), or 5-speed automatic (4WD) are available. A 2WD Pre-Runner variant is a lower cost option for customers who don't need 4WD. Sport truck buyers should look at the 2WD Tacoma X-Runner with a 6-speed manual and 4.0L V-6. When properly equipped a Tacoma has a maximum payload of 1,400 lbs. and can tow up to 6,500 lbs. which meets the requirements of many pickup buyers. Options such as the TRD Off-Road Package, TRD Sport Package, and Towing Package allow buyers to customize the Tacoma according to their needs.

2012 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab

The Tacoma Double Cab is has the largest interior of the Tacoma lineup. Available in short bed and long bed variants, the Double Cab is powered by a 236-bhp 4.0L V-6 and 5-speed automatic, or 6-speed manual. The cargo bed inner liner is made of SMC plastic to minimize corrosion. A 2WD Pre-Runner variant is a lower cost option for customers who don't need 4WD. 2012 Toyota Tundra CrewMax

The Tundra is offered in a wide range of models covering three cab styles, three bed lengths, three powertrains, 2WD and 4WD. The base engine for the range is a 4.0l V6 engine rated at 270-bhp. Two V8 engines are available, a 4.6l V8 and a brawny 5.7l V8. Cab styles include the regular cab with one row of seating, and the two-row Double Cab and CrewMax styles. The inside features front bucket seats, a pronounced center console and a 60/40 split rear seat to expand the cargo area. Toyota offers the Venza with a choice of four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines each mated to a standard six-speed automatic. The Venza is offered in three trim levels: LE, XLE and Limited. There are few direct competitors, but the Venza has a price advantage over similarly sized wagons offered by Acura and Audi.

2012 Toyota Yaris 3d Liftback

The Yaris is the smallest and least expensive car sold in the United States as a Toyota. Two body styles are offered: a 3-door hatchback and a 5-door hatchback. The two models are nearly identical except for the two extra doors. A 1.5l four-cylinder engine produces 106 horsepower and is rated at 30/35 (city/highway) by the EPA. The base L trim level includes power door locks and air conditioning, but omits power windows or remote keyless entry. The LE trim level adds these features in addition to an upgraded audio system. The SE trim level (5-door only) adds alloy wheels, a unique grille mesh, and a rear spoiler for an upgraded appearance. In this rapidly expanding segment there are comparably priced alternatives with better fuel economy, more standard equipment and disc brakes.
